On 9 May, 1913, the cities of Winston and Salem, founded by Moravian Germans, voted to consolidate the two towns, creating what is now known as Winston-Salem, NC. Its dual heritage is reflected in it also being referred to as the “Twin City”. Winston-Salem is a vibrant city with a rich blend of history, culture, and innovation. Known for its deep roots in the tobacco industry, it has evolved into a dynamic hub for the arts and education. The city is home to six academic institutions including Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, Salem College & Academy, The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Forsyth Technical Community College, and Carolina University. Historical and cultural venues in the area include the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, ARTivity on the Green, the Delta Arts Center, and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. Visit the Old Salem Museums & Gardens to learn about the cultural history of the early South–with special emphasis on the Moravians in North Carolina, enslaved and free people of African descent, and Indigenous peoples of the Southern Woodland. Winston-Salem offers a mix of historic charm and modern amenities. The city’s thriving downtown features a diverse culinary scene including Fourth Street’s Restaurant Row, craft breweries, a lively downtown arts district, an innovation quarter, free summer jazz concerts on fourth street and at Corpening Plaza and beautiful parks, making it a welcoming destination for residents and visitors alike. A convenient downtown location, the Twin Quarter provides visitors with the opportunity to be close to virtually everything.
